I am Anna Nevenic a Democratic candidate for Congress in District 3 Nevada. I am a nurse, author and peace activist. People are increasingly alarmed about the direction we are heading, yet many of the people I talk to feel paralyzed about taking action. They don't understand why we don't do something about the looming health care crisis; they are concerned about the quagmire we have created in Iraq and the possibility of attacking Iran. The sad thing is that the situation is hopeless and many believe there is nothing they can do about it. We Kosacks disagree with this. In order to motivate people to get involved, I have written two books - "Out of the Shadows" and "Hidden Agenda."
"Out of the Shadows" provides a general overview of the development of feminism in the United States. It also provides concise biographies of the key women in the United States who demanded peace and justice. The intent of these biographies is twofold. The first intent is to give readers an understanding of how these remarkable and brave women came to embrace the cause of peace and justice. The second intent is to provide the reader with an appreciation of these women and the reforms they enacted. The United States would not be the great country it is today without these women. Throughout history there have always been a handful of women who challenged the view of the world around them. These women were not afraid to speak out about injustice. These were women of a higher social status which afforded them greater freedom to do what they wanted to do with their lives. By the 17th and 18th centuries the number of women questioning the status quo and defying society's inequalities and mores had greatly increased.
By the turn of the 20th century, women had gained some degree of independence. At the same time, fundamentalists became obsessed with domestic relations and sexual behavior. They felt that marriage was under attack by feminists. Many preachers as well seemed more concerned about the behavior of women than issues of religious principles. It is apparent by studying American history that women were always in the forefront of needed reform, and not just reform that immediately affected them. Women played a vanguard role in the abolitionist movement, in the labor movement, in the fight to save the environment so the human species could persevere - in all the things that humanize as opposed to all the things that destroy.
